Steel Basics

Schematic of conventional steels, AHSS and future researchIn this section, you'll find, well, basics about steel!  If you are interested in a basic definition of Advanced High-Strength Steel (AHSS), check out Definitions on the menu.  Oh, and by the way, you can find our famous "bubble" diagram (shown left) of steel grades there too.

 If you'd like to get into the metallurgical details of some of those steel, see Steel Types.  And we have examples of chemical and mechanical properties from some of our steel research projects in Properties.

And if you really would like to learn more about how steel is made, steel vehicle applications, try your hand at making steel in a virtual factory or enter one of the many challenges, visit our steeluniversity.org page where we've identified some of those great resources that can be found on the university's website.
